Innovation: Energy 2020 & APSISTM – Energy Management in HFC Networks
More than 80% of power consumption occurs in the network and headend according to an SCTE Energy 2020 analysis. Technetix has designed its headend optical platform, line amplifiers and optical nodes to dynamically and remotely manage power consumption based on need. Individual devices may use up to half or even a third of the energy of the products they replace which helps MSOs comply with the APSIS/Energy 2020 targets for energy savings in the network.
Technologies like CCAP and cloud-based innovations will reduce power consumption in headends and data centers as less equipment is required and new equipment becomes more energy efficient. Technetix has developed an optical platform that reduces power by up to 30%. Less power consumed means less heat generated—and less energy required to cool the premises.
By far, most energy is consumed in the network. Every active device in the network consumes power. New GAN driven technology, highly efficient power supplies and intelligent digital control systems used in the Technetix DBx access platform helps drive power consumption down to achieve up to 50% power reduction compared with other commonly used equipment. When the network experiences slow data periods, the amplifier can reduce power current through its sequences to reduce power consumption even more.
